August 31, 2014 Blessings

Blessings are not something worked for but that which is free, given and excepted without condition.
God always gives His best to those who leave the choice with him. - Jim Elliot
Much of what life has to offer comes with conditions attached. Fail to meet those conditions and the offering is lost or taken away. Even life itself is conditional. Fail to give your body what it needs to continue and it dies. Blessings on the other hand are not conditional. They cannot be earned or purchased, bartered for or traded. They are meant to be shared but if they are not they will not be taken away, only lessened. Blessings are a free gift, given without condition. They are most often intangible for anyone but those receiving them. They are not always recognized or acknowledged in a lifetime unless someone else recognizes them and points them out. They can be difficult or easy, broad or narrow in scope. It is always up to the recipient whether or not to accept them but they are always there. What are they? They are anything that you have that can build up your life or other lives in positive ways that are not tied to earthly bonds and do not come with a price tag of any kind or expectation of something in return. The greatest and most perfect gift of all is our spiritual life. It was paid for at a cost none of us could pay. What is our cost? Acceptance of the gift. Life itself is a death road of no hope. Denial, ignoring or ignorance of the gift is fatal. What is the gift? Forgiveness of sin and transgression and life everlasting.

"through the Law I am dead to the Law so that I can be alive to God. I have been crucified with Christ and yet I am alive; yet it is no longer I, but Christ living in me. The life that I am now living, subject to the limitation of human nature, I am living in faith, faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. I am not setting aside God’s grace as of no value; it is merely that if saving justice comes through the Law, Christ died needlessly.

The New Jerusalem Bible. (1985). (Ga 2:19–21). New York: Doubleday.

Today is our 51st wedding anniversary. In honor of that I would like to share one of Jill's favorite backyard places. It is a wood project done several years ago because of a comment from Jill that she wished she had a swing in the back yard. This is my own design from beginning to end. It took about a week to construct and is solid as a rock.
This is a view of the swing before the roof was added.

This is the swing after the roof was added. Nice when you want some shade. The cement pads are paving blocks I used to keep the wood legs off the ground. We have Termite problems in the area.

The swing will accommodate three adults easily. The swing was my design and even the bench is my design. I made it with a curved seat and back to make it more comfortable.

Yesterday we went to our favorite restaurant at "Sunnybrook Ballroom" in Pottstown, PA. The food is good, the waitresses are attentive and if you get to meet the chef you will not regret it. It was one of the best times out we have had in a long time. What we thought would be an hour or so was more than a three hour visit. The chef joined us at our table for a good bit of the time. Don't believe me:
He  is always a treat to have visit the table. His staff says he is a floor show in his own right. He has a ton of stories and all are funny. He isn't drinking that wine by the way. He had a bottle of beer that he shoved out of view and picked up my glass of wine for the picture. That is what we are all laughing about. He provided  us with complimentary champagne (which Jill and I are holding), appetizers, and deserts as well as a ton of laughs. He even made sure the meal was made to order for us. The waitresses even sat with us when they could and talked. They made our day complete. Good food, good wine and good company. By the way, chef often stops by tables and chats when he is in house. If you are in the Pottstown area and you stop and dine here you just may get a visit from him.

Last but by no means least is a card we received from Darnell to helps us celebrate our 51st wedding anniversary.
Such a sweetheart. Thank you so much for the thoughtfulness. We appreciate it, especially knowing how busy you are. Give this sweet lady a visit and leave a comment on her wonderful blog.

I will be trying to post an update on the painting toward the middle of this week. There is just so much happening right now that it will not get done before then. Until then, remember, LOVE THE DETAILS.

I love what Darnell's card says about cherishing each moment because it will never come again. That's something I should remember at all times.

  3. Huge congrats on this extra special milestone. You both are still spring chickens judging by your photo enjoying a scrumptious celebration. And that bench should be patented. Just love the poplant holders on the side. You both are truly blessed with having each other for so many years.

  5. Happy Anniversary!! Hope you have enjoyed your day together!!

I have to comment on your swing! I have one very similar on my back deck that my husband made for me many years ago. Actually we left the frame in Germany. Glenn built it when we were dorm parents at Black Forest Academy and it sat out on the front porch of the dorm. It quickly became the favorite gathering spot. There would be 4 to 6 girls sitting on that swing at a time! I remember one evening during "study time" when I decided to go outside and relax a bit in the swing. When I went out to sit in my swing, there was a girl sitting there with her books and a lamp she carried out and plugged in on the porch, doing her homework and studying for a test! That swing got a lot of use! We brought the swing part home with us and purchased a metal frame for it here. I love sitting in my swing, reading and relaxing. I have to admit, I really like the shelves and plants on the sides of your swing!! Great job creating it!! Oh, Glenn did make another swing for the dorm girls to keep!

  8. Happy anniversary! Looks like a good time was had by all, and such a gorgeous card from Darnell to boot!
LOVE that swing! As we live in a shoebox with a matchbox for a garden, I don't get to have one, but it's definitely going on the list of things I must have when we finally buy a bigger house. :-) x

  15. Jim & Jill...A big Happy Anniversary on such a momentous anniversary milestone. I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of the post, as always. Such inspiring thoughts, and yes what a tremendous price was paid for us. Also thanks for sharing the happy pictures of the 2 of you, so nice to see you both smiling and enjoying your special day. That is a wonderful swing, and a terrific design idea to have the flowerboxes to enjoy the flowers as you relax in the shade. I'm delighted you both were able to get to a lovely restaurant, enjoy a delicious meal, and have fun & be treated as specially as you deserved by the staff. A lovely card from Our Darnell too. Another very special person. TFS & Big hugs to you both!!!

  18. Thank you for sharing that beautiful 51st anniversary photo, Jim! You two must have been like Romeo and Juliet's ages when you got married! It's a testament to how pleasant and well-liked you two are that the Chef and waitresses took the time to stop and visit with you!

Your swing is drop-dead gorgeous! Jill is going to have a lot of women jealous of her that she got someone with your talents and consideration! You really should patent that design with the planter boxes and roof! It's a little sanctuary!!

Thank you for sharing my card, although that really wasn't necessary. I'm just so glad it got there in time for this very special occasion!! Hugs, Darnell

  22. Happy Anniversary - you guys are so great together and I love that you shared a picture of your dinner. That place sounds super fun too. Love your backyard swing too - amazing design! I really enjoyed your comments on blessings. One of our biggest problems is that we fail to see the blessings or we take them for granted. It is much easier to see this when we get older or go through rough spots. Lovely post Jim. Hugz to you and Jill!

  27. Wow, Jim...such an incredibly heart-warming post I don't even know where to begin commenting (amazing for me...I'm such a 'talker'). First, Happy 51st Anniversary; how incredibly blessed you both are to have found your soul-mate. May you have many more years of joy and love to share. Your swing, Jim is amazing, and what a gem you are to make Jill's wish come to fruition. Everything about it makes me smile, but the side pieces for housing plants..oh, my goodness! Now those are special touches, indeed! Of course, a card from Darnell - most excellent! Your 'date night' looks and sounds nothing short of fabulous; fine wine, fine meal, fine companionship! I live on the other end of the continent from you, but should we ever travel in your direction, I'm definitely checking out this restaurant (and maybe we'll ring your doorbell too!). Mega-watt smile on my face in seeing this! Thank you for sharing your love!!

  29. Yay for you both - happy 51st. We just celebrated 21 (although hubby is still in MI with my parents and I spent yesterday here in Germany with his Mom :) Looks like you had a wonderful celebration and I'm loving that swing you built. With flowerboxes! Whoa. That's a Cadillac for sure. And oh the patience you must have to work on that paint by number. It's been years since I've done one. Thanks for visiting. Nice to be back.
