Friends are a special gift with a place of honor in the heart of those who receive them.
There have been many definitions for friendship but living up to any of them is something few are able to do. They come in many different flavors but they are always there in time of need and, at times, even give their lives for us. I would not expect the sacrifice of a life for me but it is comforting to know that some are willing to give up time and put forth effort to solve a problem even when not asked to do so. They are there in good and bad times to offer support and to comfort. There is no judgment or finger pointing but advice or a shoulder if needed. All of these things and more are what a friend is.
1792 Best Definition
An English publication offered a prize for the best definition of a friend, and among the thousands of answers received were the following:
“One who multiplies joys, divides grief.”
“One who understands our silence.”
“A volume of sympathy bound in cloth.”
“A watch which beats true for all time and never runs down.”
But here is the definition that won the prize: “A friend—the one who comes in when the whole world has gone out.”

1793 Tribute To Friendship
I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you;
I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me;
I love you not for closing your ears to the discords in me, but for adding to the music in me by worshipful listening;
You have done it without a touch, without a word, without a sign. You have done it just by being yourself.
Perhaps that is what being a friend means, after all.

Now we come down to brass tacks. The post. This a very unusual card for me. No image(s). I recently saw several posts that were dedicated to a parent who had passed and thought it to a be a good idea for a card. So here is the front of the card.
I have often wondered what we are paying for when we buy a card and the back is bare and what did my $8 or more buy? The back of my card.
Nice idea card companies. Now I got my monies worth. Front and back together.
The left side was not done to match the front edge. After all the front is the focal point. The inside is finished this time as well.
Jill asked me, "who the card was for since I am sitting right here." Now you have your answer. In remembrance of those who have gone before us.

Oh how artistic this is!! From embossing to the lattice die cut, gold and shimmer... a remarkable piece :)
ReplyDelete"One who multiplies joys, divides grief." Beautifully said.
ReplyDeleteAnd what a lovely card to remember someone passed on. Love that you kept it white. And the added tactile interest to the back of the card was a great idea.
This is such a complete piece of art. This is the first time I'm seeing someone work over the back side too. I love the neat embossing. Indeed, a very special card, made for a special reason.
ReplyDeleteLove the embossing. So cool how it turns out when you open it up. Hope you have a great week!

A very clever idea to do the back of the card! And why shouldn't it be as gorgeous as the front? A wonderful tribute to friendship and love!
ReplyDeleteWOW, amazing post. Your posts always make me misty, and miss my husband (wokrs late) that I simply ADORE with all my being, and luckily it is so reciprocated in every possible respectful, honorable, caring, and loving manner.....How blessed I am I feel when I come away... Truly blessed. Thanks for that. and your comments are taken to heart. You would not know it by my posts, but a tired and trepidation heart I have in knowing if I am nay good at all. I don't want riches or fame, I have that in spades in my family.. sometimes I feel I hit my unattainable mark... then I start all over. Blessings to you. -Kimberly.

ReplyDeleteJim, this is a moving and beautifully written piece on friendship. Thank you for that; where would we be without our friends? Your card is unique and genius! The point is well-taken and well-illustrated. Why don't we do the backs? Prolly because we don't want to push our luck and we're so totally relieved when we get the FRONT down and done! lol! You'll have to start your own challenge someday, or maybe someone else will see this and steal the idea for a challenge to do the fronts AND the backs of our cards!
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining my NBUS Challenge! It means a lot to me that you chose to enter and I appreciate what a compliment that is! And thank you for spreading the word! Have a great day! Hugs, Darnell

ReplyDeleteA very cool idea indeed!!! Love the idea and love your card!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful card and a beautiful post!
ReplyDeleteStunning idea to embellish the back to be as pretty as the front. {Maybe when I catch up, I'll borrow this fine idea :-) }. Also like the idea of making it for those we love who are in another place, but still with us in our hearts. This is one very beautiful card, with the lovely embossing and the glittered heart. You did super on this one. I also enjoyed the Friend posts. Some inspiring thoughts here. When I worked I had a little calendar blurb, that I saved and kept on my desk. It said "A true friend is one who stays your friend & still likes you - even when you've made a total fool of yourself". I always thought that was a good thing to remember, and I have few folks that I think that would be applicable to. Not many, but a few good ones! TFS & Hugs to you & Jill.
ReplyDeleteAmazing card. Love your design on all sides.
ReplyDeleteThe definitions are wonderful, thank you so much for sharing them! Love your cards too and how lovely to do a front and a back - great idea. Thanks for your visit and comment. Anne :)

Jim, your card is stunning in every way. But what is most remarkable is the responses it, paired with your beautiful post on friendship, evokes in others. Kimberly's comment, in particular, is so incredibly from-the-heart, as is Darnell's, as are several others (and yes, I feel the mist of tears in my eyes). You touch lives, my friend...and that gift is one we all appreciate and love! That's why we keep coming back: beautiful artistry and a most beautiful heart. You have the 'details' figured out!! Blessings~c

Hi Jim, hope that this lovely Sunday is finding a happy day at your house, and a day of rest from your labors around the place. Blessings.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I have missed a lot of beautiful work while away from my blog. I've finally returned...not saying I've had that much rest, though. :-) You left us a wonderful "friend" post today and a beautifully designed card. I'm sure it will be greatly appreciated when used. Very pretty, indeed!!
ReplyDeleteA friend is someone who helps you hide the bodies, a true friend helps you dig the hole. Or something like that. All the ones you named are far better definition of friends methinks. Gorgeous card with lots of nice embossing and die cutting and very heartfelt at that.
ReplyDeleteThis is so creative. I just love how those embossed trees grows into caring hands at the top. And the lattice effect is a lovely touch. Thanks for sharing food for thought on friendship.
ReplyDeleteHugs DesÃre {Doing Life}
