May 1, 2014 Heavens Gate

Since this is a rather long post I will dispense with my usual Bible word study and comment and get down to business. This is an off-cycle post for me and I wanted to finish this card to enter it into a Cornish Heritage Farm challenge for Thomas Kinkade. So here we go.

I posted the image some time ago in a segmented post so you could see the progress of the image as it was done. For the sake of saving time here are the colors I used.

Remember? 66 of them. Whew! Well for the card we can add one. Y28 was used on the front of the card. I created a window or aperture card. A bunch of pieces had to come together to make this work. It is a top folding card. It didn't photograph well but here it is. I got tired of pushing the shutter button.

The Gold frame and gate are fastened to the acetate with Scor-tape cut into tiny squares to keep it from showing. This is the only place the acetate is fastened to the card. The gold frame was fussy cut since I have no suitable die for the purpose. The acetate flexing makes it look like a terrible job but I assure you it isn't. The embossing frame is from Marianne Design. I altered it for my purposes. The strip across the top is to hide the tape that is holding the acetate to the card. It is an embossing background from Cuttle Bug that I found in a bargain drawer. The gate die is Spellbinders "Gilded Gate." Both the frame and the gate are fastened directly to the acetate.

The sentiment on the front and inside the card are actually from an song by Fred Blom (1867-1927) called " He the Pearly Gates Will Open", Tr. by Nathaniel Carlson (1879-1957).  I changed the wording slightly to fit the theme.

On the inside of the card the die cuts in the top corners are salvaged from scraps destined for the trash. I know, not quite a dumpster diver but I can't see throwing something out that is usable. No idea what they are from. The seemingly black background is actually deep purple. Of course it would not be complete without this on the back of the card.

I entered this into the Cornish Heritage Farms Challenge. The link is here.

Whewee! I feel like I just ran a marathon. I hope you enjoyed this venture. Probably will be my only challenge for awhile. I hope you like what you see. Until next Wednesday at the earliest remember to LOVE THE DETAILS.

  9. WOW, this is beautiful. I have all these TK stamps from the previous owners of CHF from years ago. They are challenging to color up, but you have done a stunning job. And the gate is absolutely gorgeous. Maybe I should get them out and give them a whirl again, you have inspired me. Beautiful work.

  12. Oh wow this is just soooo artistic. Such a serene scene with out of this world colouring. Those purple trees reminds me of the Jakaranda trees we get here in South Africa too. I am also now your latest keen Follower via Google Friend Connect.

  14. Well, you've really outdone yourself this time. It's finally finished and well worth every minute it took...and I'm sure it was many, many hours. What a beauty and I love the gate. You really need to keep and frame this one. Did you tell us earlier you were going to do that?

  15. Definitely _did_ like it! Have to take exception though, to your comment about acetate flexing causing it to not look well. Sure looked fine on my monitor! And your purple mat did look purple too. This is such a beautiful scene, and I'm admiring your keeping track of the markers used. The tree reminded me of the purple jacaranda trees in So. Florida, so pretty. This required a lot of intense work on that image, and you did a terrific job. That gate die is beautiful and so right for this particular scene, and my hat's off to you for working with the acetate as you did. I'm still not attempting acetate yet...but I love seeing what's being done with it. Your C/B top trim was great to hide what you didn't want visible too. Never would guess it's not just a 'design element'. Great save on the pretty corners too. You're going great guns with your card making too. Happy wkend to you & Miss Jill. Hope the weather is going to be pleasant, and ya'll just enjoy the time. TFS --oh yeah, I'm agreeing with Benzi..this should be hanging on a wall, or placed on a desk or someplace to enjoy every day.

  18. Spectacular card! I love what you did with the colouring on this image...it looks more like a water-colour rendering, rather than one done with plain old markers, albeit Copics. That sky is really outstanding...it seems almost real! I am especially impressed by the use of the gate die and the fussy-cut frame on the cover of the card. Very creative! I shall look forward to seeing more of your work in the near future.

  20. Oh My Goodness, this card is incredible!! I can't believe all the intricate details, especially the parts you fussy cut. You must have very steady hands! The painting is just beautiful. I love that you used acetate and are able to see through the gates just enough to make you want to go inside and see more. You can certainly tell that you love what you do. Stunning!

  35. Oh my word! You did your colored image proud with this one, Jim! In fact, all this fancy frilly see through card from almost takes the spotlight but then you coloring steps up and everything else is forgotten as we stare in awe. Your idea of the acetate is a completely brilliant way to use that gilded gate.
